SETS

► Sets: "a collection of well-defined distinct objects".

Descriptive form: One way to specify a set is to give a verbal description of its

elements.

Examples: (Set of first ten odd integers.) (Set of vowels of English alphabets.)

Tabular form: Members of a set are written within braces and are separated by

commas.

Examples: A = {1,3,5,7,9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19). B={a, c, i, o, u}

Set Builder form: Set-builder notation is a mathematical notation for describing a

set by enumerating its elements or starting the properties that its members must

satisfy.

Example: A= {x|x is odd number and is less than 20)

B = (xxis vowel of English alphabets)

{3, 4, 5, 6,...) = {X ENIX > 2) its read as "the set of all x's in natural number,

such that x is greater than 2".

> Union of two or more sets: If A and B are any two sets, then the union of set A and

Set B consists of all elements in set A or in set B and is denoted by AUB.

Example: If A= {1,2,3), B=(3,4,5) find AUB.

The intersection of two or more sets: If A and B are any two sets, then the intersection

of set A and set B consists of all those elements which are common to both A and B.

and it is denoted by ANB.

Example: If A=(1, 2, 3. 4), B-.(3,4,5} find ANB.

> Difference of two sets: If A and B are two sets then their difference consists of all

those elements of set A which are not in set B and it is denoted by A-Bor A/B.

Example: IfA= {2,3,4,5,6), B=(5, 6, 7, 8) find A-Bor A/B =?

A-B or A/B= {2,3,4,5,6) - {5, 6, 7, 8)= 12,3,4}

Disjoint set: Two sets A and B are disjoint sets if they do not have any common

clementine. ANB==

Example: A = {4, 5) and B = (6, 7, 8), find ANB=?

ANB = {4,5} n {6, 7, 8) = {}

Solution: First arrange this data in ascending order 41, 41, 41, 45, 66, 85,95
So the most frequent value is 41, so the mode of the number is 41.
